Principles and Practices
American Government: Principles and Practices is a practical study of the American political system.
The program develops students' awareness of the principles of American government by presenting ideas simply and developing them logically.
Ideas are reinforced through a readable narrative, complete with examples, and through a wide variety of precisely executed graphs, charts, tables, diagrams, and maps.
American Government: Principles and Practices is designed to inform students about the American system of government.
The text moves logically from the foundations of American government to citizen involvement in the political process, government at the national level, state and local governments, and, finally, to government at the international level.
The text itself is divided into 8 units and 28 chapters.
Each unit opens with two colorful photographs visualizing the unit theme, a unit introduction that discusses how these photographs relate to the topic of the unit, and a listing of the chapters within the unit.
Each chapter begins with a photograph illustrating the chapter topic, a list of chapter objectives, and a Civic Participation Journal.
The Civic Participation Journal serves to develop the chapter theme and to promote student interest.
Each chapter centers on a topic basic to an understanding of American government and the American political system.
Concepts, developed in the narrative, are reinforced by a variety of photographs and graphic art.
Concept terms appear in boldface type and are defined or explained in the margins.
Four types of special features are interspersed throughout the chapters.
CASE STUDIES present government-related issues that have already been decided.
ISSUES present opposing viewpoints on a topic of debate in today's political system.
PROFILES focus on the lives of individuals who have made a difference in shaping our nation's political structure.
COMPARISONS detail various aspects of comparative government.
Each major section of the text concludes with a series of review questions that check student understanding of important facts.
Each chapter concludes with a summary that concisely highlights key points in the chapter.
At the end of each chapter appears a Chapter Review that contains Building Vocabulary, Reviewing Facts, Analyzing Facts, and Evaluating Ideas sections.
Every chapter also contains a Thinking Skill that helps students develop a specific critical thinking skill.
Each unit in American Government: Principles and Practices concludes with a Unit Review that contains Review Questions covering the content of the unit and a list of Suggested Readings for students who would like to read more about a specific topic covered in the unit.
In addition, each unit also concludes with a Building Citizenship Competency skill that teaches students a specific skill they need to fulfill their responsibilities and protect their interests as citizens.
An Appendix at the end of the text provides full-color maps of the United States and the world, a Glossary containing all the boldface terms in the text, and a comprehensive Index covering all major topics discussed in the text.
